blogging/youtube MAC rant

Hello girls! Pretty unplanned post and that could possibly show in the writing of it but i've literally just decided to do this within the last 5 minutes. One of them nights where I feel like bashing the keyboard will help ease how much this topic annoys me haha. As much as I love reading outfit posts and beauty posts I also love some more sort of 'rant type posts'. Could be really controversial and you may all read this and hate me but it's just something that I thought i'd share with you, in the hope you don't hate me. :)

It wasn't something that I noticed at all within the first month or so of blogging but after watching a lot of youtube videos and things it seems extremely common and equally as frustrating on every video/post. It's a little more popular within the Youtube community but it even crops up on a few blogs. I don't even know how to describe it that well, brand snobbery, brand pressure maybe? Basically i'm referring to that sort of pressure to own everything with really high brands, really high price tags and really high quanititys of it.

Paticularly with MAC and youtubers, the obsession is just unreal. The makeup collection videos though, they really do go over the top. 'Draw number one we have 50 thousand MAC foundations in every shade possible which i'm never going to use but I just want to have them to say I own lots of MAC' 'Draw number two we have 20 thousand MAC brushes which don't get used but again, I just want to say I own MAC'. Another favourite is when they mention every single MAC thing in the draw but when theres a few drugstore products, they're ignored and presumed invisible. Fair enough go out and buy lots of MAC if you love the brand but to buy everything in every shade, slightly over the top? Am I the only one that gets slightly annoyed with this whole branding snobbery almost? It's so unrealistic and gives such a false view of most real girls. It's so misleading and puts so much pressure on girls to have a huge makeup collection of high brand makeup. I do think it's very much about the whole stigma that MAC has attatched to it which makes girl want to have something just to say/show they own MAC. Buying makeup just because of the brand name is so shallow and pointless in my mind. I'm not saying that every single piece of MAC makeup is pointless or anything like that at all. It is a really excellent brand (personally i've only used the foundations and lipsticks so I don't know about the rest of their makeup) and a lot of their things can't be duped on the highstreet but seriously, the whole thing where everything they have has to be MAC (or Chanel, Estee Lauder, Benefit and all the rest) is just pathetic. I can understand if you're makeup artist but the everyday average girl, it baffles me.

At one point I was even watching these videos thinking 'wow, I must go out and invest in lots of high brand makeup'. Seeing all these girls with all this makeup does make you want to go and buy it just to build up a collection but then I finally came back down to planet earth and realised there's no need for it Ashleigh. You've used mostly Drugstore makeup for so long and it's been great until now so why spend ridiculous amounts of money on other makeup just because you've seen a few youtubers with it. Why have 20 blushes when you only need a few? I'm so so glad I did realise before it was too late though.  Am I the only one who's went through this phase?

Some people will probably read this and automatically think 'she's just jealous' but honestly, you're wrong. Nothing at all to do with jealousy just something that annoys the life out of me! Yes it's their money to do whatever they like with, it's just the way it's portrayed on the internet, as though it's so common and every girl has all this makeup. I'd just love them to get themselves to Boots/Superdrug, nothing wrong with a bit of Rimmel y'know! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in comments. Do you agree with me?

I totally agree with you! It's becoming a bit annoying to see MAC EVERYWHERE!

I get what you mean about having loads of foundation shades that they would never use. I would understand if they were a make-up artist, but they probably aren't!
I don't have to money to buy high end products- the only one I own is a clinique foundation because I have acne prone skin.
I adore cheaper make-up brands like 17 and Collection 2000 :)

I'm glad you brought this to light, I was beginning to think I was the only one! Like you, I was thinking of discarding drugstore make up for high end make up :S I think it does become a bit of an obsession, although for some people I guess it's a hobby and they could say the same about someone who has a tonne of clothes! The only MAC stuff I own is all part of the Hello Kitty range, which I brought for the H.K really not MAC ;)

I totally agree with you!

& its because theres such a pressure, that girls who only have a few high end products dont show their other makeup. I own a few high end bits and generally think that people would rather read about them than the million cheap things i have. Well NO MORE ;) my blog will now feature all of the cheapy gems that i love, hope yours is the same :) xx

definitely agree with this.
until I started reading blogs I never felt the need to buy these products and I was only slightly aware of them. But now I find myself thinking "I must buy mac foundation when my perfectly good Rimmel one runs out". I don't like it, especially when 'drugstore' brands can be just as good or even better as my housemate found and then loads cheaper. It's also nice to treat yourself to something a bit more expensive every now and then when you can afford it rather than all the time - then it's more 'special' haha.
Good post :) xxx

I was the same, i would watch videos and think i need this brand or i must just buy makeup to have a big collection. I am so glad that i didn't take this route, my collection is small really but it consists of all products that i really love and use all the time, there is the odd product that i have brought and not liked but that just comes with trying something, but nothing in it is brought just to be able to say i own it. I honestly would recommend everything that i own :)
I love shopping in boots and superdrug, i walk through boots every morning before work and i can never resist having a look at what new products are out. Then normally i would come home look on here and see if anyone has tried it or reviewed it and then make my decision on the purchase from there.

I didn't realise how much i actually had to say on the subject :)

you have a good point and i totally see where you are coming from, but to everything you said here in my head i was talking back with reasons why us girls have this much.
when i started youtube i will not deny i only had a meer bag of make-up, but since going on you discover new products, i have a lot of mac & benefit products, not because of the name, but because of the quality, drugstore make-up is good and there's some real gems there, but high end make-up puts more research into things, us youtubers have so much make-up as we use it in our videos, & being partner on youtube gives you the ablity to afford this make-up which many of us gurus puts back in to our channel by buying the latest products, & your point on needing to have things in different shades, many gurus are not qualified make-up artists but still apply make-up to other people, having different shades enables them to create different looks.
I love boots as much as i love mac,
my comment is the odd one out here but still. :)

I thought I was the only one that thought this too! I am so glad its not just me that does feel almost pressured as such to go out and buy all the MAC products and the Chanel nail varnishes and like you put so well that if you've had drugstore brands for so long and they work well for you then it would be silly to go out and buy expensive products that do the same thing. The quality of an eyeshadow for example might be better but I just can't justify spending £15 on a single eyeshadow! I think its great that someone has finally written this as there's probably a whole lot of girls out there feeling the same :) xx

I know exactly what you mean! I've never really been interested in trying MAC - my sister likes it so I've occasionally borrowed things and they've been nice, but as I'm not obsessed with make-up I don't see them as worth buying. If I had a youtube about make-up, loved make-up etc maybe I would care, but even then it doesn't make sense to me for normal girls to invest so much in something so superficial if it isn't a hobby to them, it's just to look good. x

Ok firstly, nobody can hate you for having an opinion but hallelujah!
Someone else like me! Ok, mac is great, but a blush for 17 quid? rather get a couple rimmel or collection 2000 ones. I mean Loreal is drugstore but its still good.
I also hate in makeup collection videos when they don't have a lot of mac and they have more drugstore products, they always go 'yeah my collection is crap sorry, i have like nothing' and whizz over cheap stuff, im proud to have my miss sporty 2.99 mascara and so are other makeup gurus, eg. Fleur de force!
Thanks for bringing this up :)

I agree with this! I think tbh its a bit of a ripoff! i think yes a few really nice staple prouducts that will work well that are a tad over priced fine! but its literally when they have every single product! I'm a big drugstore girl myself and proud! I love your blog and this post it makes you look like a really down to earth lovely person! (not that i ever thought you weren't, but you get what i mean!)
